Flyfishing in New Zealand

Absolutely world class flyfishing! This is the best way we can describe New Zealand. This beautiful country offers outstanding scenery, trophy trout and an experience that will definitely become part of your most treasured angling memories.

Flyfish Downunder has taken great care to select the best possible angling experience for you and would take great pleasure in arranging either a Kiwi stop over en-route to Australia or a total New Zealand experience.

Imagine fishing in crystal clear streams and rivers where you can see your prey before you cast. These are stocked by one of the best self renewing sources of trout in the world. Taupo is fortunate in having a lake that that is abundant with wild trout. The food supply is so plentiful that the trout grow to sizes only seen in few other parts of the world, and in numbers so plentiful that the fishery is totally self sustaining. The last time it was stocked was in 1898! This means that all the rivers and streams flowing into the lake are well stocked each year by the spawning runs, making for excellent fishing. The lake's main food sources are koura (a fresh water crayfish), green bullies and smelt.

Access is by 4 wheel drive, boat (to rivers flowing into the lake that cannot be reached by driving) and by fixed wing and helicopter for the back country wilderness streams.

One of Taupo's key attractions is the ability to fish all year round. Well thought out conservation policies and the abundant stocks of fish, make it possible to keep a selection of streams available to fish the spawning runs during the winter, while others are closed to maintain the high numbers of fish. The Taupo license map shows you the range of streams and rivers available within a relatively short travel time. It also shows you the waters that are available year round (blue) and the other colours signify open seasons of varying lengths.
